Luke’s Lobster

WORKING TO SECURE A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR AN INNOVATIVE SEAFOOD COMPANY & THE NEW ENGLAND LOBSTER INDUSTRY

Luke’s Lobster

A certified B Corporation, Luke’s Lobster is committed to bringing fresh, traceable, sustainably sourced seafood to its customers. This forward-thinking seafood company relies on long-standing relationships with local fishermen to source the freshest and best seafood from New England’s waters which they then prepare and ship directly to their restaurants and customers. Selling directly to the consumer means a premium product and a fairer price for fishermen. However, with the waters of the Gulf of Maine warming faster than 99% of the world’s oceans, Luke’s recognizes the need to do more than just deliver great products and is now focused on addressing climate impacts as another means of ensuring a sustainable future for itself and the seafood industry.

  • Evolving an industry steeped in tried-and-true methods and a generations-old culture of independence is no small undertaking. To do so, Luke’s partnered with Council Fire and the Island Institute, in pursuit of broad-sweeping changes to combat climate change. The first step is to help the company become carbon-neutral in its own operations.

Next steps are focused on efforts to decarbonize the entire New England lobster industry with an eye to ultimately blazing a path for the sustainable future of all American fisheries.

  • Council Fire leveraged its industry knowledge, relationships, analytical expertise, and communications skills to support Luke’s critical efforts. As part of this effort, Council Fire:

    • Conducted an analysis of direct and indirect emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions) for Luke’s Lobster’s main products - lobster and crab.

    • Developed recommendations to reduce Luke’s greenhouse gas emissions.

    • Assessed Luke’s Lobster’s unique lobsterman-based supply chain, focusing on actionable and culturally-sensitive recommendations for improvements.

Moving forward, Luke’s is leveraging Council Fire’s recommendations to:

    • Assess, prioritize, and implement actions to reduce its emissions.

    • Plan for tailored engagement, education, and communications with fishermen, regulators, elected officials, and supply chain actors.

  • • Delivered detailed calculations of Luke’s direct emissions and indirect upstream emissions (Scopes 1 and 2 emissions).

    • Cataloged indirect downstream emissions (Scope 3 emissions).

    • Identified actionable and practical carbon reduction opportunities that can be immediately implemented, as well as initiatives that will be implemented step-wise over the coming years.

    • Enhancement of Luke Lobster’s profile as a leading industry voice on carbon neutrality and sustainability efforts in the seafood world.

    • Luke’s Lobster and Island Institute continue their regional efforts to decarbonize the lobster industry and create a more climate-resilient Gulf of Maine working waterfront.
